About Carmel Carmel is a place to eat, stroll down the cobblestone side-walks, enjoy the art and beauty that we call home. Father Junipero Serra founded the Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelin 1771.The first city map for Carmel was filed in 1888. Carmel-by-the-Sea was established in 1902 by the Carmel Development Company. In the early 1900's, Carmel was basically barren and the lovely forest of today was planted by the Development Company. We are a small community that still picks it's mail up at the post office and never has to carry change for a parking meter. Carmel-by-the-Sea developed as a "center for the Arts". The first Open-air Theater in the state was founded here by Herbert Heron in 1910. This was followed by the Golden Bough Theater built by Ted Kuster. Our first Bach Festival was held in 1933. The Sunset Center is our headquarters for cultural events and sponsoring organizations founded in 1964. The Bohemian writers and artists of the 1920's included: George Sterling, Mary Austin, Upton Sinclair, William Rose Benet, Sinclair Lewis and Robinson Jeffers. Carmel's population is 4,457. Carmel Valley - the sunny rolling ranch land is surrounded by the Santa Lucia Mountains. It comes complete with a winding river, award winning wineries, world class golf resorts and pastures complete with horse. The hamlet of Carmel Valley Village offers wine tasting, fine dining, antique shops and a variety of inns. Carmel Valley's population is 12,441. |
